I’m downloading the latest Harry Potter movie onto my laptop.
My laptop isn’t slow and neither is my internet, but the movie says it’ll take 12 hours to download.
Is there any way to speed things up?
Maybe connecting my laptop directly to my modem (how do you even make that work?)
I really want this movie to download quicker I could have watched it online for free by now…
    So, Thanks!

How to Speed Up an iTunes TV Show Download
1 Update iTunes. If you still run an old version of the software, your performance and download speeds will suffer. Visit the iTunes page at Apple.com to download and install the latest version (see Resources). If you do not know your current version, click the “About iTunes” option. For Mac users, this appears under “iTunes” on the menu bar; for Windows users, it appears under “Help” on the menu bar.

2 Turn off the Genius feature. Genius constantly runs in the background and analyzes your downloads and playlists in order to create new suggestions. As a result, the feature can greatly slow the functions that require your immediate attention, such as downloads. To turn off Genius, click “Store” on the menu bar and select “Turn off Genius” from the drop down menu.

3 Turn off the Apple TV feature. Like Genius, Apple TV will slow your iTunes performance by constantly scanning the software. Click “Preferences” to access your “Preferences” window. This appears under the “iTunes” menu for Mac users, and under the “Edit” menu for Windows users. Click the “Apple TV” tab and uncheck the option that reads “Look for Apple TVs.”

4 Click the “Sharing” tab on your “Preferences” window and uncheck the boxes that read “Look for Shared Libraries” and “Share my Library on My Local Network.” Sharing demands additional system performance, and as a result can influence your download speeds. Click “OK” when you finish.

5 Close other applications on your computer, like web browsers, torrent clients and anything else that may compete for your system performance.

6 Download and install an iTunes download accelerator (see Resources). Programs like Download Accelerator Plus, Autobahn and Speedy iTunes offer the ability to boost download speeds by optimizing your Internet connection.

How to connect your laptop directly to your modem:
If you plug into the router with a cable you’d have a full 100 Mbps connection, there’s either a connection (or a faulty cable if not – ‘signal strength’ doesn’t come into it with a cable :)
If the distance is long, or complicated router, then another option would be to consider powerline adaptors (try looking on Amazon for Solwise 85 Mbps adaptors) and the data goes over the mains wiring in the house.
It’s a neater solution if there is a long cable run to make the connection, and you can add more adaptors if you ever add more PCs, and now you can even get some ADSL routers with powerline connection built in. Has great reliability and security too – wifi can be received by neighbours.

No torrent sites – I want to download movies legally and I know I will have to pay for a membership. But there are so many movie download sites so I need some input on which ones have the best selection and have the fastest downloads. No reoccurring fees or per download fees would be nice also. I know the answers will be mostly just your opinion, but I will check out each movie site before I pick the best answer. Thanks for the feedback.

There’s a review and comparison of the features of the top movie download sites at http://www.reviewdownloadsites.blogspot.com. For what you are after I would recommend taking a look at the last review of Movies Capital. They offer one off membership prices, are completely legal and had all the movies I wanted in DVD quality so I’d definately recommend checking that out before you make your decision. Good luck :)

I want to download the movie Shoot ‘Em Up, but I’m on a 4gb Sprint plan. I don’t want to watch it over the internet, I just want to download it and then watch it. How many gigabytes will it take to download it?

  14. wsworld0 says:

that depends on too many factors… resolution, source, format, compression, audio, internet source, legit or not, etc.

The most common is the “aXXo” format, made popular by well known DVD ripper aXXo. 700 MB, 384p video. These are from DVDs, ripped at high quality and compressed to a CD-format size. AVI format.

there’s the CD+ size, some movies just end up being 800 or 900 MB

the 2X CD size, for better quality you have a two 700 MB or a single 1400 MB file.

the DVD size, 3-4 GB if AVI and 1 GB if not.

the Blu-ray size, that’s 25 GB or so, an AVI file.

other formats could be MP4 – typically 700-2500 MB, of medium quality and 720p.
MKV – file size varies, honestly I’d say this is the best format there is. you cna have a super-high quality 1080p movie and it’ll only be about 1.5 GB. I’ve seen excellent MKV movies that’s 720p and it’s only 500 MB! typically MKV is used with HD movies only. allows for multi subtitles, multi audio, even multi video streams! 720p typically 1.5 GB, 1080p typically 2.5 GB

RM – crappiest of the crap. rarely used, typically with 240i or 384i video and it’s super compressed to a tiny 50-100 MB per hour of content. popular back in the day when we only had modems, but these days it’s obsolete.

I have rented 4 movies that I would like to watch on a plane tomorrow but when i go to downloads the 1st movie says it will take 359 minutes. I have the iphone 3gs and I am connected to my home wi-fi. How do i speed up the download?

  16. wsworld0 says:

First you should download them one at a time and not keep the others waiting. Second make sure you have no other downloads interfering and third you may just have to much on your iphone and may need to delete some unnecessary things.
